Dermatology Dictionary: Distinguishing Between the Different Types of Pimples

In your mind, a pimple is just a pimple. However, did you know that there are 4 different categories of pimples, all with unique distinguishing factors? By understanding what kind of pimple is staring back at you in front of the mirror, you can help to decipher between different treatment options and understand the cause of your pimples as well.   • Whiteheads: As one of the most common forms of acne, whiteheads are primarily caused by clogged pores due to excess oil and dirt trapped in your skin. In order to combat whiteheads, try to use a skincare regimen that is filled with oil reducing properties.
  • Blackheads: Primarily appearing on your nose, blackheads are a form of acne that is dark in color (hence their name). Similar to whiteheads, blackheads are typically caused by the overproduction of oil but can be treated by using things such as blackhead strips, a blackhead face scrub, or through gently extracting them yourself.
  • Pustules: Pustules are a type of acne that is caused when the skin itself becomes inflamed. As the form of acne that you typically think of when you think of a “zit”, pustules typically have a yellow or white dot in the middle an are red around the rest of the pimple.
  • Nodules: Nodules are a severe form of acne that cause red, painful, and inflamed pimples to spread across your face during an intense breakout. Primarily caused by hormones, if left untreated, nodules can cause severe scarring that won’t go away unless treated with a laser.
