Kybella is the first and only injectable drug that has been FDA approved to improve the appearance of sub-mental fat, otherwise known as “double chin”.
Stockton Dermatology in Phoenix, AZ is proud to announce that Dr. Stockton is one of the few specialized physicians that have been carefully selected by Kythera, the makers of Kybella, to administer this new drug. Only the top “core physicians” in the valley were chosen to introduce Kybella to the aesthetic market. These core physicians have extensive experience with dermal fillers, patient selection, and have a high success rate for patient satisfaction.
What is Kybella?
Most of us like to think that everyone else has a double chin. But under our chin? Move along. Nothing to see here. Truth be told, most everyone has some unwanted business going on beneath his or her jawline.
It’s been an area that could only be addressed by surgery…until now. Kybella® is a prescription brand name for an injection formulated with deoxycholic acid that dramatically tightens and improves the profile of people with moderate to severe double chins. Kybella® was approved by the FDA in April 2015 for the reduction of fat under the chin.
There is no shortage of double chins
The neck and chin are both susceptible to the pull of gravity and loosening of the skin as we age. Since both areas don’t have bone under them for support, they are continually being pulled downward. Double chins develop due to a variety of factors: gravity, intrinsic aging caused by decreased collagen production, genetics (some people simply have looser skin beneath their jaw), and weight gain. The result of those factors is drooping skin under the chin and an undefined chin profile.
Double chins actually have a clinical name — submental fullness. The condition is not rare. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery conducted a survey in 2015 on double chins. The results showed that 67% of people were “bothered by their double chin.” And they said their double chin bothered them just as much as wrinkles and other signs of aging.
It’s interesting that more attention hasn’t been paid to submental fullness, considering how common it is. Up until Kybella®, the only way to deal with a double chin was through a facelift or neck lift, often including liposuction.
How does Kybella work?
Kybella® battles your double chin
Kybella® is basically made of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid occurs naturally in the body; its job is to aid in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Now you can see the simplicity behind Kybella®. To deoxycholic acid fat is fat, meaning it doesn’t differentiate between dietary fat and other fat that can be found in pockets under your chin. When Kybella® is injected into the fat beneath the chin, it destroys the fat cells. And it destroys them permanently, removing the storage mechanism to accumulate fat in the area. That means your double chin is gone for good, as long as you don’t put on a good deal of weight in the future.
Can Kybella® be used elsewhere?
We know what you’re thinking — if Kybella® works so well on fat under the chin, why not use it on other unwanted fat pockets, such as those found on the lower abdomen or the upper thighs? Thus far, Kybella® has only been approved for use on double chins. It seems to work best on small areas. Research is ongoing to see how effective Kybella® could be on lipomas and under eye bags.
How many Kybella® treatments are needed?
As with most procedures, each individual situation is unique. Dr. Stockton, who is one of the valley’s top “core physicians” chosen by Kybella®’s manufacturer to introduce the drug to the public, customizes every treatment based on the patient’s needs. Each treatment involves a series of injections with a very small needle. How many treatments are needed depends on the amount of fat the patient has under his or her chin. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received six treatments to attain the results they sought. Sessions last less than 30 minutes and are spaced four weeks apart to allow the deoxycholic acid to work its magic.
How long does Kybella Last?
Once Kybella® attacks and dispatches the fat under the chin, patients have shown a marked decrease in fullness under the chin, and truly dramatic improvements in their profiles.
