What is a Melanage Peel?
Usually, when the summer season is over, we have patients coming into Stockton Dermatology in Phoenix, AZ complaining about their uneven skin tone and melasma or concerns about deep pigmentation. In these cases, we highly recommend the use of the Melanage Peel System which is a superficial peel system that was designed to specifically treat pigment concerns like melasma. This is a two-part treatment plan that will improve the appearance and texture of your hyperpigmented skin and melasma using a medicated masque and a regimen that you will maintain at home.
Do Melanage Peels Hurt?
This treatment is proven to be effective for both men and women of all skin types. It is an especially popular treatment among our patients in the Phoenix area because they experience no pain during the treatment and there is only minor discomfort while the masque is being applied, a sensation very similar to getting a minor sunburn.

Melasma Treatment
This system is designed to pull out all the unwanted pigments to the outermost layers of your skin where it can be exfoliated to reveal a fresher, newer you. When done properly, the Melanage system effectively reduces the chances of the discoloration coming back after it has been treated.
The procedure of getting Melanage treatments consists of two parts.
- The first part is an in-office procedure where the Melanage masque will be applied to the desired area. The Melanage peel has prescription strength ingredients and will penetrate your skin at a cellular level. A uniform layer will be applied to the skin and this will stay on the skin for a certain period of time in order to work. Patients will leave the office with the masque still on and they have to keep the masque on for about 5 to 10 hours.
- The second part of the treatment is an at-home chemical peel involving a regimen that you have to keep religiously to ensure maximum effects. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to check on your progress and the effectiveness of the Melanage system. Patients will experience peeling 3 days after the masque has been removed and light peeling will still follow in the next 30 days.
Are There Any Risks?
Like any medical procedure, we at Stockton Dermatology urge our patients to verify if the technician performing the procedure is properly trained and certified. All cosmetic procedures have accompanied risks and to be able to ensure that these risks are minimized, we have to make sure that it is done only by a licensed practitioner.
What Are The Side Effects Of A Melanage Peel?
Using the Melanage peel has very minimal side effects. These include redness and peeling of the skin, but the symptoms last for only about a week and mild peeling to up to a month while the treatment is ongoing. It is common for patients to experience slight skin itchiness and irritation, but these symptoms will soon go away after a number of days.
