What is an Excimer Laser?
In our pursuit to offer only the best patient care, we at Stockton Dermatology always challenge ourselves to provide the best options to our patients here at Phoenix, AZ. We always make sure that we keep up with the fast changing trends in cosmetic and dermatological technology and offer all of these revolutionary techniques here at our facility. And to help us achieve this goal, we are now offering Excimer laser procedures to our patients as an effective treatment option to those suffering from psoriasis and vitiligo, as well as other skin conditions.
The management of psoriasis requires patients to maintain a combination of regular applications of medicated creams, oral medications and light therapy to be able to control the uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms. Excimer lasers do away with all this hassle and help control mild to moderate psoriasis without the risk of harming the healthy skin surrounding it. Excimer is a handheld laser that uses concentrated and focused doses of ultraviolet light to target the affected area. This treatment is very similar to light therapy but patients can appreciate the results with fewer sessions.
How does an Excimer Laser work?
Like any other procedure that we perform at Stockton Dermatology, we conduct a comprehensive consultation with our patients to get an initial assessment of their condition and to provide all the information that they will need about the procedure.
Excimer lasers work by delivering high intensity UVB light at 308 nanometers wavelength. This very specific dose directly targets the psoriasis plaques. Throughout the whole procedure, the Excimer lasers never touch the surrounding areas of the psoriasis plaques and reduce the risk of getting any UV radiation exposure.
How long does treatment take?
Each Excimer laser treatment session lasts for just a few minutes. During the procedure, your doctor will aim the Excimer laser directly at the psoriasis patches. Our patients will feel some warmth in the area while this is being done.
How long will Excimer Laser results last?
Patients who opt to have Excimer laser treatments enjoy the results for as much as 4 to 6 months longer than other treatments for psoriasis or vitiligo. Compared to other laser therapies, Excimer lasers patients would need fewer sessions to be able to achieve the desired results.
Does the procedure hurt?
The whole procedure is quick and painless and it features the most advanced technology in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions. Excimer laser treatments are highly recommended especially for hard to treat areas like the elbows and knees, hands and feet, and a patient's scalp.
