Microneedling has become a very popular skin procedure in recent years. So what is microneedling and how can it help your skin? Let’s take a look at some of the basics.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is an extremely effective treatment to help improve the overall look of your skin by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a form of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) and is considered to be a non-ablative treatment. That means the deep parts of your skin are being treated but the top layer isn’t removed, like in other cosmetic skin treatments that offer similar results.
What Does Microneedling Treat?
As briefly mentioned, micro-needling is great for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps with scarring caused by acne or sun damage. It can even treat uneven skin tones and other skin texture issues.
What is a Micro-Needling Procedure Like?
While microneedling therapy may seem like it’s only for facial skin, it can be used to treat other parts of your body like the neck, arms, or legs.
The procedure itself takes place at our office, Stockton Dermatology in Phoenix, AZ. We start by administering a local anesthetic to the treatment area. Then we use a small, hand-held device with tiny needles inside. Each part of your skin will need to be treated about 15-20 times for maximum impact. The device moves along the skin and penetrates the surface up to 2mm with thousands of puncture marks (or micro-needles).
How Long Does Microneedling Take?
A micro-needling procedure typically lasts about 20-30 minutes depending on the area being treated but it’s best to plan on 60 minutes total due to numbing.
What Is Recovery From Microneedling Treatment Like?
Dr. Stockton will likely provide post-treatment care instructions for the affected area that we recommend following as closely as possible. We recommend using tepid water to cleanse the area for the first 48 hours following your procedure. It’s also important to remember that your hands are disinfected before touching the area to avoid infections.
