8 things you should know about microneedling

MicroneedlingWhen you aerate your lawn, you add small holes to the soil to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps roots grow deeper and produces a stronger, healthier lawn. Microneedling is similar in that it involves pricking the skin with tiny needles to cause the body to produce more collagen and elastin and improve the overall appearance of the skin. Here are eight things you should know about this effective, popular rejuvenation treatment.

  1.     Microneedling is a form of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), which means it treats the deep parts of the skin without having to remove the top layer of the skin as is done with other skin treatments.
  2.     Microneedling can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring and treats uneven skin tone and other concerns with skin texture. It is especially effective on hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation.
  3.     Microneedling induces the body’s natural response and triggers it to form new layers of tissue with elastin, collagen fibers and capillaries.
  4.     Microneedling also allows topical skincare creams to penetrate deeper and absorb more effectively into the skin’s top layer.
  5.     Microneedling also improves the thickness of the dermis and epidermis, which helps improve the texture of the skin.
  6.     Microneedling can be done on other areas of the body, including the neck, arms and legs.
  7.     Even though the procedure consists of using very fine short needles to make thousands of puncture marks or microneedle channels, it isn’t a painful procedure. Local anesthetic is applied to the treatment area. The handheld device applies the tiny needles about 15-20 times to each treatment area for maximum effect.
  8.     The procedure takes under an hour between the time for numbing and the actual treatment. It’s important to follow aftercare instructions thoroughly to avoid any complications. Patients will be advised on how to cleanse the treated area for the first few days after treatment.
